This has been on my mind…
I used to think that I was sensitive to this rhetoric because of my own disordered history and advocacy work. Then, I realized– ‘food talk’ is the new ‘weather talk.’ It’s go-to conversation fuel. All-the-time. Just listen. How often do you talk about food? How often do you hear about it? And, WHY?
Why has ‘food talk’ become language currency and what judgements are behind the chatter?
‘Food talk’: It certainly is a fire-starter…
I’m thinking this fire is better left for the digestion of our bellies not our mouths. Just saying…
Food is fuel. And, conversation– well that used to be how I got to know you. Now… Well, now I know that you are vegan who can’t eat red food dye. GREAT. But, what about you? When was the last time you cried? What is your favorite time of day? Sure, food feeds your body.. in the most AMAZING way. (Have you ever read about digestion?! Pretty RAD :P) But- YOU- you are not your diet de jour. When did the two get confused?!
And, beyond that, did we forget that food can be medicine too?!! How miraculous. And, important to individually honor. Like medicine, a prescription is UNIQUE to everyone. My best lunch is MINE. As it should be. When honoring my needs, no one really needs to know what I am on. Accordingly, nor am I qualified to prescribe what you need. When there is doubt, that’s where health professionals come in. Not magazines, gossip, or google. (Yes. I am white flagging it here!)
What if we let food be food? Fuel. Medicine even. And, leave it at that…
Then, what if we got back to real nourishment in our conversations?
Seriously. I’m asking for you to try. I will too.
What if for one week there was NO ‘FOOD TALK’?*
Simply, no: ‘too much’, ‘not hungry’, carbs-calories-gluten-monk blessed rice grains- TALK. Instead, try eating, chatting bigger and having some joy with your meal. Of course, if something tastes good you can acknowledge it. (I’m not putting you on a diet ;).) I’m just talking about a little discipline. Mindfulness. Meaningful assimilation.
For ONE WEEK the task is as follows: fuel your body appropriately and nourish your connections. Relationships. Try conversing. Try jokes. Try anything really!!!
THEN, let me know how it goes!!!
Tell me your stories! Tell about the last time you laughed out loud. Tell me about your latest victory. That’s the stuff I want to hear about…
I’ll tell you mine too :).
And, THANK YOU.
*If you think this ‘food talk’ can’t stop there is help. Resources.
